Blood as a cornerstone for pandemic preparedness
On 23rd November 2023, CoBA held a virtual side session at the CPHIA conference in Lusaka, Zambia themed “Enhancing Africa’s Health Security: Blood as a Cornerstone for Pandemic Preparedness”.The session brought together key stakeholders to emphasize the vital role of continental health bodies like WHO AFRO and Africa CDC in shaping policies to enhance blood services across Africa. Discussions highlighted the need for strong regulatory frameworks, emergency preparedness, and universal access to safe blood. Addressing blood shortages in low- and middle-income countries was a key focus, with solutions including donor mobilization, improved logistics, and innovative approaches such as drone deliveries and “walking blood banks.” Strengthening partnerships between governments, the private sector, and development organizations was identified as essential to improving blood collection and distribution systems.
The transformative impact of technology and innovation in blood services was also explored, including AI-powered donor education, mobile apps for inventory management, and advanced storage solutions. Investments in infrastructure, healthcare training, and sustainable technologies like solar-powered blood banks were highlighted as critical to ensuring long-term success. The session underscored that by harnessing innovation and collaboration, Africa can develop a resilient and efficient blood supply system that saves lives and strengthens healthcare across the continent.
