Africa Women’s Health Symposium:
The Role of Blood in Strengthening Health Systems to Mitigate Postpartum Haemorrhage in Sub Saharan Africa
At the First Africa Women’s Health Symposium in 2022, CoBA proudly hosted a side session focused on the critical role of blood in strengthening health systems to combat postpartum haemorrhage (PPH) in sub-Saharan Africa. The discussion brought together experts to examine Kenya’s blood supply landscape and explore necessary investments, policies, and regulatory frameworks to enhance access to safe and sustainable blood for mothers.
A key takeaway from the session was that blood and its components are vital to reinforcing healthcare systems. Maximizing blood’s potential in mitigating PPH requires a holistic approach—beyond donation—to optimizing every stage of the blood supply chain, from donor to recipient.
